South Africa: Young Birds Fly to Kenya

12 January 2009

Moroka Swallows defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele is excited about the prospect of representing South Africa during the African Youth Championship to be held in Rwanda this month after his club finally agreed to release him for the Under-20 squad camp in Kenya.

Mphahlele, the Under-20 captain, together with his teammate at the Dube Birds, Phumelele Bhengu, jetted out today to Kenya where they will join the rest of Under 20-players for camp in preparations ahead of the African Youth Championship to be staged in Kigali.

Mphahlele called KickOff.com from the OR Tambo airport a few minutes before boarding the flight to Kenya and expressed delight at joining his teammates for the tournament.

"I have just arrived at the airport together with Ace Bhengu. I am very happy that my team has finally decided to release us for the tournament.

"I would have been sad had I missed this tournament because it involves the best young players in Africa.

"After winning the Cosafa Cup in South Africa in December I am confident that we will continue to fly the country's flag high in Rwanda," he adds.

South Africa is in the same group as Nigeria, Egypt and Ivory Coast.
