Senator Grace Bent, Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology has called on the Federal Government to include environment and ecology in the 7-point agenda of the present administration.
Bent who made the call in Yola in an interview, said that the environment and ecology were key issues that may militate against the socio-economic survival of the country if not handled carefully.
She said that desertification in the Northern states, gas flaring in the Niger Delta, depletion of the ozone layer, erosion and other ecological problems were issues that needed immediate attention by government.
Bent, who represents Adamawa Southern Senatorial District in the senate, said that some of these problems were caused by pollution.
She said that several countries in the world have evolved strategies to tackle environmental problems and called on Nigeria to follow suit.
She explained that for government to effectively tackle the myraids of environmental and ecological problems confronting the country, there is need to include them in the 7-point agenda.
She said that states and local governments should be made to contribute to the ecological fund.
The chairman also called for the establishment of an Ecological Agency to tackle ecological problems facing the country.
