West Africa: Economic Meltdown - Experts Meet in Lagos

13 January 2009

Lagos — Experts from all over the globe are expected in Lagos, on February 10 and 11, to discuss the impact of recent economic turmoil on the ECOWAS region and analyse the latest economic trends and opportunities in the region.

The expert will gather at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, for the second annual EuroFinance conference on Treasury, Risk and Cash Management for West Africa, at a time of enormous uncertainty in the global financial system, to analyse why tight cash management is essential for operating a successful business, and how it is the responsibility of cash and treasury managers to safeguard their companies against risk and prepare for all eventualities.

In a release jointly signed by Coss Williams and Tim Newbold, both of Africa Practice R&B, the Euro Finance conference brings together local cash managers with international experts, to provide in-depth analysis and information on how to operate effectively in today's financial world.

The statement noted that "globally, central banks are coming under huge pressure to fix the economic system, but this is not an easy task. How should central banks revise their approach to supporting banks and other institutions during a downturn and how can company treasurers help and advise central banks?

"At the same time, banks must fundamentally alter the way that they operate and corporations, therefore, have to review the way they manage their finances.

"How are these changes being implemented in West Africa currently? Are banks and non-financial corporations doing everything that is necessary?," the statement noted.

The Nigerian Naira has fluctuated in value of recent months.

Are West African currency reserves strong enough to offer long-term protection to the value of regional currencies?

How can the system be improved to facilitate currency transactions while preserving the stability of currencies?," it noted These are just some of the issues on the table as EuroFinance brings together leading experts to map the way forward and identify opportunities as the crisis enters its second year.
