Uganda: Hailstorm Hits Isingiro District

13 January 2009

Kampala — OVER 137 families in Isingiro district lack food after a hailstorm destroyed crops on Thursday evening.

The families occupy the villages of Masha, Nyabugando, Kamagabi, ByaruhaI, Byaruha II, Rugaara I, Kicweka and Rugaara II.

Nyabugando LC1 chairman Abdul Kigundu said the crops destroyed included cassava, beans, millet and bananas.

He said there was no food because most families in the sub-county depended on Matooke. He called upon the Government to come to their rescue.

Dennis Tumwesigye, a resident of Kamagabi village, said: "We are distressed. The crops were our source of income and food. I do not know how we are going to survive."

The state minister for animal industry, Maj. Bright Rwamirama, visited the area on Friday.

He promised to bring food relief and seeds from the agriculture ministry.

Rwamirama told residents to be calm, adding that the problem would soon be solved. He asked them to plant trees because they lived in a disaster-prone hilly area.

Rwamirama disclosed that it was not the first time a hailstorm was hitting Kabingo.

In October last year, Kabingo sub-county was hit by a hailstorm which destroyed gardens and houses.
