Angola: Rural Development Programme Improves People's Living Standards

14 January 2009

Luanda — The programme of rural development and fight against poverty (PDR), an initiative of the central government, has enabled the improvement of social, economic, housing and infrastructure conditions for thousands of inhabitants of twelve rural zones of the country's eighteen provinces, since its start in 2006.

Speaking to ANGOP, in Luanda, on the PDR's importance, the chairman of the confederation of associations of peasants and cattle-breeding co-operatives of Angola, Paulo Uime, said that the project has enabled the creation of rural villages with housing and urban conditions similar to the cities.

According to him, Rural Villages project has already been implemented in the provinces of Bengo, Bié, Uije, Huambo and Cunene and its second stage is expected for this year and will also reach the provinces of Benguela, Malanje, Luanda, Kwanza-sul, Kwanza-norte, Huila and Cabinda.

The source explained that the Rural Villages are compared to improved housing complexes, with streets, water, power supply, drainage

network, radio and television signals, shops, schools and health centres.

One of the advantages is their inclusion in the ongoing national reconstruction projects and also it improves the living standards of people in rural areas, with the construction of the mentioned infrastructures, as well as factories to transform agricultural products in the field.

"Most of the people want to come to Luanda as rural areas are in need of schools and hospitals. If we put there drinkable water, electricity, schools and universities people living in those areas will only come to Luanda for holidays and service", the source explained.
