Uganda: Karimojong Kids to Tour Denmark

Kampala — WORLD humanitarian agency UNICEF will take young sportsmen from Karamoja for a sports tour of Denmark this year under the Sport for Life Project opened in the region recently.

The project was officially launched by the primary education state minister Peter Lokeris on Thursday and is being run in partnership with Karamoja Kids League. It covers Moroto, Nakapiripirit and Kotido districts. The programme that targets 6 to 14-year-old children aims at increasing enrolment in schools.

UNICEF goodwill ambassador Kasper Lorentzen, a Danish national team player, is part of the UNICEF team currently on a four-day tour of Karamoja area.

UNICEF Denmark head of education for development Anne Mette Friis said the tour slated for April would help the disadvantaged children. "Sports is a good tool of creating unity, self esteem and conflict resolution," Friis said.

Project coordinator Joseph Opio said through sports, they will also promote health, education and peaceful development for children in the region.
