Nigeria: Lagos Tasks Youths on Megacity, Infrastructural Devt

Lagos — Lagos State Government has challenged youths in the state to complement the current determined efforts of rebuilding a sustainable mega city.

The state Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr .Ben Akabueze, who gave the charge at the "Lagos Youth Leadership and Economic Summit" in Lagos, said the process of redressing the decades of neglect of the state's infrastructure required that youths must have input into the type of society they want.

Urging youths to eschew complacency and embrace positive anger in the quest for Nigeria of their dream, Akabueze noted that demonstrating positive anger allowed the youths to engage with their society and challenging the status quo towards building not only its moral fabrics but in dealing with the negative perceptions of the nation.

According to him, the participation of the Lagos Economic Summit Group in the youth's summit, reflects the administration's commitment to seeking views from the ultimate beneficiaries of its programme.

The commissioner further noted that there was a moral obligation on the part of the current leaders and managers of Nigeria to ensure that they leave Nigeria better having known quality life hitherto.

Akabueze added that the road to a new nation required major attitudinal change that starts with individual before gaining momentum as more citizens especially youth begin to be change agent.

In his remarks, Chairman of the summit, Mazi Ohuabunwa, said the time of the youth had arrived especially given the challenges of the global economic meltdown, which requires the ingeniousness of all citizens be put to use in moving Nigeria forward and mitigating the economic downturn.

He said the challenge faced by the nation required the creation of new value systems, new entrepreneurial pursuits and new change agents, adding that whoever has better ideas, solutions and knowledge should be listened to.

Stating that the economic situation was beyond government's purview alone, he said the initiative of the Federal Government in constituting a steering committee was commendable, adding that a comprehensible package and action plan would emerge from the committee.
