Ghana: Nananom Reunion to Hit Town

In spite of what Ambolley, Azigiza and Poncho were doing, which could best be described as a form of rap music, one young man with the name Reginald Osei, aka Reggie Rockstone, introduced hiplife into the Ghanaian music industry with outstanding hit tunes like, Agoo, Tsooboi, Nightlife in Accra, and Sweetie Sweetie.

Apart from Reggie Rockstone, one of the famous hiplife groups which has contributed in making waves within the Ghanaian music industry, was 'Nananom' (nah-nah-num, The Chiefs), one of the first rap groups to record a second album after Reggie Rockstone. The group consists of three emcees, with their popular hit sound 'Wo Kyere Wo Ho,' which obviously does ring a bell in the ears of fans back in the 90's.

The reunion of this famous hiplife group 'Nananom' awaits a lot of hiplife funs, whose album is yet to come out soon, for Ghanaians to enjoy and remember those African mix tunes of hiplife songs.

This is a must reunion, which most Ghanaians have been calling for ages, but at last the cat has been let out of the bag.

The announcement came at a time during a programme dubbed 'Morning Ride' with Anita on Metro TV with Barima (Sidney).

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Barima Sidney, emphasised that the main purpose of the reunion of the group was based on the fact that is now ten years since the group was formed.

"This album is being put together to whip up the yearning interest of hiplife fans, who used to enjoy African tunes with rap lyrics, blended as hiplife," he added.

Barima noted that most of the work would be done with Omanhene Pozo, and since Jyoti is in Germany she would be unable to give a helping hand.

However, Barima noted that Jyoti would be communicated with, as to how she could be of help to the new album.

After the breakup of the group, Barima Sidney is known in the music industry for his African tunes, which seem to address issues of controversy within the continent.

One of his recent sounds, which political parties would have wished to have on their campaign trail, is 'African Money' with a French and English blend, addressing corruption in Africa.

They use Akan parables and weave interesting stories to very commercial beats. They first featured on Reggie Rockstone's Makaa Maka in 1997, on a track solely featuring the group.

The song was entitled 'Agoro' (Twi for games). The group was made up of three artistes, which was based on the concept of the Ghanaian culture. The names represented authority within the local communities, namely Nana Ohemaa (Jyoti Chantber), Nana Kyeame (Sidney Ofori), and the last but not the least, Omanhene Pozo (Emmanuel Amponsah).

Two albums to their credit: Nana Kasa (The Chief Speaks) - Jan 1998: Nana Nono (The Chiefs are all that!) (1999). Hot singles of Nana Kasa: 'Wo Kyere Wo Hu' (wuh-cher-reh-wuh-huhn) (You're Too Proud!): 'Ofie Ne Fie' -(oh-fe-eh ne-fe-eh) (Home and Home): 'Ewuradjoa' - (eh-wrah-djoo-ah) (a female born on Monday).

Hot singles of Nana Nono: Alright: Washeda Anaa (Did you do it on purpose?): Wone Hwan (Who are you).
