Windhoek — A PARTIAL solar eclipse could be seen in Namibia yesterday morning. The best places for seeing it were Windhoek (30 per cent), Swakopmund (32 per cent) and Keetmanshoop (40 per cent).
Windhoek was overcast, however, and the eclipse could not be seen. A solar eclipse happens when the moon lies directly between the sun and the viewer, but the location of the moon is as such that it appears smaller than the sun, making the outside of the sun still visible.
The Directorate of Research, Science and Technology in the Ministry of Education distributed 1100 eclipse viewers to schools in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Keetmanshoop. It was planned to engage 10000 pupils and teachers to view the eclipse, as this year Namibia celebrates the International Year of Astronomy.
