Zimbabwe: Road Closure Proposed

Harare — HARARE City Council intends to permanently close off Orange Grove Drive South at its intersection with the Newlands bypass to avoid accidents and unncessary loss of life.

Town clerk Mr Tendai Mahachi said objections to the city's proposal should be directed to the director of urban planning services within the next two weeks.

"A motor vehicle survey carried out revealed that a substantial number of motorists are illegally turning right eastwards into Newlands bypass thereby compromising safety and human lives," he said.

Mr Mahachi said already a fatal accident has occurred at the intersection and a number of near-misses are being experienced on a daily basis.

"It is therefore, proposed to close Orange Grove Drive South in an endeavour to reduce the potential of accidents occurring caused by a few misguided and dangerous motorists," Mr Mahachi said.

Newlands bypass road was opened to minimise traffic that go into the shopping centre to allow people to carry out their business without traffic disturbances.
