Mutare — Preparations are underway for the fifth edition of the Manica Festival 2009 organised by Africa University.
The annual event will this year take place from March 27 to March 28 and its theme will be "Arts for Peace".
The arts festival is part of Africa University's long-term strategy to position itself as a principal hub for propagation and promotion of the arts in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa region.
Thokozile Chitepo, the dean in the faculty of humanities and social sciences said the event would help put the university and the city of Mutare on the arts map of Zimbabwe and southern Africa.
It will also help regenerate cultural activity in the eastern border city, she said.
"Because of its celebrated and international outlook Africa University provides a unique and intellectual and multicultural experience for the local and international students," Chitepo said.
She said the festival will go a long way to foster greater understanding among the various stakeholders of Africa University and the City of Mutare while placing the institution on an elevated pedestal as Africa's premier multinational institution of higher education.
Manica Fest runs as a non-profit event. It receives funds from donor organisations and other beneficiaries with an interest in promoting local and regional arts and culture.
The festival will draw people and participants from diverse backgrounds, which will have a positive knock-on effect on local commerce and tourism.
Artists and educators with different genres of theatre, film, sculpture, fine art, comedy, music, dance, literature and poetry will participate at this year's festival.
Chitepo said the festival would also encourage participation by people from all racial and cultural backgrounds.
Manica Fest will commence with a grand parade through Mutare city centre culminating in an opening ceremony at Africa University campus.
The Manica Fest aims to promote networking in the community, nurture youth creativity and support positive cultural values and practices.
