Lagos — Equatorial Guinea yesterday fingered the Niger Delta militants as the masterminds of the armed attack on its presidential palace.
The attack was said to have been aimed at destroying and subverting the country's government.
Equatorial Guinea is the third oil-producing state in the Gulf of Guinea with a long history of bad governance and authoritarian rule under President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo in the past three decades.
Reuters, a news agency quoted the government as alleging that the attackers came from the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, an area that had suffered a high incidence of seaborne insurgent attacks, kidnapping and attempts to wreck off-shore oil installation in the last two years.
The agency reported that gunmen, who stormed Malabo in several gunboats, attacked the presidential palace from the country's territorial waters around which Equatorial Guinea shared maritime boundary with Nigeria.
According to the government of Equatorial Guinea "our country was once again the victim of an attack by the rebels of the Niger Delta on the city of Malabo. The Niger Delta crisis is now a major threat to our country.
"A contingent of rebel terrorists from the Niger Delta arrived in numerous boats and tried to invade the capital city of Malabo, with the aim of taking and destroying the presidential palace" .
The country also added that one of the attackers was shot dead while another group drowned when their boat was sunk by the Navy.
President Mbasogo was in Bata, the country's mainland, when the gunmen launched the armed attack yesterday.
Although the government said the gunmen had tried to seize the presidential palace, Foreign Ministry of Spain said the attack appeared to be criminal in nature, rather than an attempted coup d'etat.
Government also denounced the attack in its statement as nothing more than the "usual manoeuvres of our external enemies" and called on the population to be patriotic and collaborate with the armed forces to denounce those who might be suspicious.
