Kano — President Umaru Musa Yar'adua has identified human capital development as a major pillar of his government's 7-point agenda. He assured of government's determination to ensure that the county's universities were equal to the task.
Speaking in Kano, during the 27th convocation ceremony of Bayero University Kano, Yar'adua explained that his administration remained resolute in its cardinal policies on education. He emphasised, that "Federal government has identified education as one of its policies under the 7-ponit agenda".
Yar'Adua, who was represented by Minister of State, Education, Hajiya Aishatu Dukku, called on Nigerian universities to redouble their effort in information technology (ICT) and applauded Bayero University Kano for its commitment to ICT education.
The president also pointed out that Bayero University, Kano, was a major player in ICT in the country.
He pointed that the 7-point agenda will transform Nigeria to a more respected nation by 2020, said its noble but arduous.
In his speech, Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Attahiru Jega, said a total of 6,794 graduands were co nferred with degrees and diplomas, saying "55 PhDs were also conferred with 1,237 Master's degrees".
Jega also stated that 1,189 also conferred with Post-graduate Diploma and 2,947 were conferred with first Degree, 1,366 received Advance and ordinary Diplomas, saying "in the first one year the university has conceived of and completed a number of projects, many of which were commissioned.
He said the university has continued to strengthen its teaching and research capabilities and expand its academic programmes in key areas of need, while assured that the four new programmes were initiated at faculty of medicine which comprised Bachelors of Nursing science, Bachelors of Dental surgery, and bachelors of medical laboratory.
Jega also added that BUK recorded 100 per cent accreditation success in last year assessment and verification conducted by National University Commission (NUC), and this will enable the university to retain their rating as one of the best University in Nigeria.
According to him, the vision of the university is to continue with the task of repositioning the BUK to make it one of the best universities in Africa in terms of excellent teaching and research facilities with quality of its graduates.
The convocation ceremony also honored Professor Eskor Toyo with doctorate degree and Dr. Jonathan Fantom of MacArthur foundation with doctorate degree on LLD, while Alhaji Aliko Dangote doctorate degree postponed as a result of his an avoidable absent due to other commitment and Dangote has requested to postponed of the his conferment to next year's convocation and his requested considered by governing council of the university, said Professor Jega.
