Harare — AFRICA University will this year celebrate the university's unique Pan African and international art fete with residents of Mutare and beyond in their fifth edition of the Manica Festival scheduled for March 27 - 28.
Dean of the faculty of humanities at Africa University Tambudzai Zindi said the event will showcase artwork of young and emerging artists from Manicaland and elsewhere in Zimbabwe and Africa.
"The festival is an opportunity for students in the arts as well as those interested in the arts to show the products of their works from their community projects or their own artistic talents", said Zindi.
There would be performances from emerging and expert artists from Mutare and its environs.
"Due to funding constraints, this year's edition will have few artists from outside Mutare, but several groups from Mozambique, Angola, DRC, Botswana will perform," she added.
The festival, which is in its fifth year, had the first two editions being run under the name Africa University International Arts Festival.
"However, due to public demand, the university's community service/outreach goals, we dubbed it 'Manica Festival' from 2007."
The festival would also include discussions with four speakers on topics such as Arts for Peace, workshops on Choral adjudication, drama, poetry jam and jazz fusion, Cultural peace parade with a variety of artists parading through Mutare City.
The Manica festival started off as a department of music project at the university but later expanded to other arts genres and also moved location to Mutare City as part of the institution's commitment to expand the arts.
