Kano State government will embark on an enlightenment campaign against the spread of Lassa fever in the state, the Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Aishatu Isiaku Kiru has said. Addressing newsmen in her office yesterday, Hajiya Aishatu said the campaign which would be carried out by the state's ministries of health and environment would emphasise on preventive measures against the disease.
"The campaign against Lassa fever is a responsibility of both the ministry of health and that of environment, therefore the two ministries are collaborating on the campaign against the disease because preventing its occurrence is the best solution as it does not have any prescribed treatment when it occurs."
Hajiya Aishatu further explained that the disease is caused by rats, therefore people must ensure that their homes are protected against rats and other harmful insects and pests.
She cautioned that even though there had been no reported cases of the disease in the state, it is very important that people take preventive measures.
"There have still not been any reported case of Lassa fever in the state but we are calling on members of the public to ensure that their homes are free of rats and other dangerous pests and insects that could transmit diseases," she said.
The commissioner further called on members of the public to ensure that their homes are well ventilated, saying it is important as a preventive against the spread of meningitis while urging people to report to the nearest health centre once any symptom of illness is observed.
