Zimbabwe: Tsvangirai Recovering, But Devastated By Loss of Susan

Doctors attending to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai are satisfied with his recovery process after the car crash on Friday which killed his wife, Susan. MDC officials said Tsvangirai might be released from hospital this weekend.

It has emerged that Susan was flung out of the car as it rolled over and it's suspected the vehicle landed on top of her. Rescuers found her 15 metres from the wrecked vehicle, mortally wounded with serious internal injuries and fractures to both legs.

She was rushed to Beatrice hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body is now at Nyaradzo funeral parlour, in Herbert Chitepo road Harare. Mourners are gathered at Tsvangirai's Avondale home. The couple had been married for 31 years and have six children.

Tsvangirai's driver Simbarashe Mujeyi was also seriously injured in the crash, but his condition has been described as stable. His aide, Benson 'Okolo' Muchineuta, was also injured. They are all being treated at the Avenues Clinic in Harare.

Tsvangirai's car was part of a three vehicle convoy that was headed towards Murambinda in Buhera, when it was involved in a collision with a haulage truck just after Beatrice, 52 km south of Harare.

An MDC MP told us people are not convinced it was an accident, even though the driver of the truck said he lost control after falling asleep behind the wheel. The truck, which was heading towards Harare, encroached on to the other lane, forcing the lead vehicle in Tsvangirai's convoy to veer off the road to avoid a collision.

The MP said Tsvangirai's driver also tried to get out of harm's way, but it was late. The truck crushed the right hand side of the vehicle, behind the driver, forcing Tsvangirai's landcruiser off the road. It then rolled three times. The driver of truck was reportedly taken into custody by the police on Friday. As he is the key to this accident it is worrying that his whereabouts at the moment are still not know.

Tsvangirai, who turns 57 on Tuesday, had long been under threat of death from groups loyal to Mugabe. In 1997 an unidentified gang tried to throw him from a 10th floor office window, and in 2007 he was admitted to hospital with serious injuries, after a brutal assault by police at a prayer rally.

Senior MDC officials in Harare are refusing to speculate on the cause of the crash, but Tendai Biti, the party' secretary general, said they will call for an independent probe into the accident that killed Susan. Biti told journalists in Harare at a press conference on Saturday that the late Susan was a mother not only to the Tsvangirai family, but also to the party and the nation.

'She was a pillar of strength. The decisions the party took sometimes had the refining wisdom that came from Mrs Tsvangirai,' said Biti.

'She was always there for the President and for the party. The accident took place within a context of joy and celebration. The MDC President celebrates his 57th birthday on Tuesday.' Broke down several times during the press conference.

He said the accident could have been avoided if Tsvangirai had been provided with a police escort.

'Logic would have demanded that police escort be provided to the Prime Minister, to warn other traffic, and this tragedy could have been avoided."

If ever there should be an investigation into the cause of the crash, Mugabe should first be suspended in order to prevent him from influencing the investigators!

This criminal can do anything to cover up his crimes and those of his cronies.

I call on all Zimbos to support dragging Mugabe before the ICC!

In all honesty, how do you get a proper investigation in a country where the chief of police is a militant, judge is a militant, doctor is a militant, president is a militant. All fingers point at Augustine Chihuri he is the one that has been abducting, assaulting and terrorizing Morgan, he is the one that said he would never salute a puppet; he is the one who has not been selected by an elected official. Look at the history of these people and where they were trained? China, Russia, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Korea, East German and then compare how government opponents are killed in those countries and if it’s any different from what is going in Zimbabwe. Who said "hautongi tiri vapenyu" How many times has Morgan appeared in hospital with broken bones and swollen face? The finger points at only one culprit, ZANU PF "the party of Blood" The blood stains lead us back to the state house inside the office of the shriveled old man. An advise to Morgan; go bury your loving wife and get hell out "Dodge City", these are not rational people they are not ready for change. Remember Benzair Bhutto? Do not let these suckers pull the Bhutto on you. The MDC leadership should pull some leaders out of the country for strategic reasons.

it is clear that some people who are making comments on this tragedy have no real compassion for the bereaved. Wild speculation that ignores known and acknowledged facts only serves to deepen the grief of those who are in mourning. It was established quite early on that the truck that killed Mrs. Tsvangirai and injured the PM and his driver belongs to the Government of the United States of America. The UK's Daily Telegraph (UK)got direct confirmations from the US embassy in Harare and from a British Government minister that (a) the truck belongs to the US government and (b)the driver of the truck was recruited by a British agency. If the urge to speculate wildly is so strong, why not speculate about THAT?!
