Ilorin — There is now scarcity of commercial motorcycles in Ilorin, as the Kwara state command of the Federal Road safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested over 2000 monocycle riders over non compliance with the safety helmet as directed by the federal government since the nation-wide implementation of the policy kicked-off in January this year .
The Task Force on the use of Safety Helmet and The Commander, of the FRSC, Mr. Yusuf Salami in the state who disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Ilorin, yesterday noted that the current clamp down on violators of the policy had became imperative in view of the observed negligence among motorcycle riders in the state on the directive.
Salami who said that about 70 motorcycles were arrested by his men at the beginning of this week alone, stressed that the sector has embarked on a renewed strategy to ensure strict compliance by all concerned.
He said the sector has set a higher target for itself to achieve a compliance rate as high as 98 percent before the end of the second quarter of 2009 hence the recent clampdown on offenders stressing that '
"Our people seemed to have taken things for granted but we must enforce the law because it is for the good of the people", he stressed.
