Kampala — THE Government will provide loans to tenants in the next financial year to enable them buy land, the state minister for elderly and disability affairs has said. Sulaiman Madada revealed that the funds for the scheme would be channelled through savings, credit and cooperative societies and encouraged tenants to enroll in the groups.

"Tenants in Kayunga and other districts where land disputes are rampant will be the first to benefit from the scheme," he told participants at the launch of the HIV/AIDS prevention project at the Kayunga district headquarters in Ntenjeru recently.

Madada said the scheme was aimed at helping the landless to acquire land, saying this would reduce land evictions.

The minister asked leaders of Community Awareness and Response on AIDS (CARA), a local NGO that will implement the HIV project, to work with local leaders on the programme.

He also called upon local leaders to mobilise residents to actively participate in the prevention against HIV/AIDS, adding that there was need to have healthy and educated people in order to achieve sustainable development.

CARA director Willy Kabiyambi said the HIV/AIDS campaign that targets about 36,000 people would be conducted in Kangulumira, Nazigo, Kayunga, Busaana, Kayonza, Wabwoko, Bbaale and Galiraya sub-counties.

The project targets children aged between 13 and 18 years, he said. Kayimba added that fishing communities and married couples would be involved in the project.
