Nigeria: Re-Branding - Country May Be Worse If Credibility Gap is Created - NIMN

30 March 2009

National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN) has warned that Nigeria may be worse for it if the problem of credibility gap is created in the re-branding process currently embarked upon by the government.

On the other hand, the institute also stated that if the re_branding of Nigeria is properly harnessed it would be better for the citizens and boost the nation's economy value.

Stakeholders in the marketing profession who spoke at the Institute's 2009 fellow forum to induct 14 new members said that government should put every instrument in place to make it work.

The President of NIMN, Luggard Aimiuwu said that a holistic approach should be adopted to make Nigerians believe in themselves and change their perception in the marketing of the re_branding.

"The rebranding syndrome will make us create more value and excel in our performances," he said

The president said that the challenges facing the ministry were the ministry's failure to recognise skilled professionals to handle the re_branding.

According to him, NIMN has the skill and human resource to conduct the re_branding adding that NIMN members are professionals that create, manage, build and sustain brands to work.

"The ministry should access best marketing hands and NIMN have the best resources to reposition the country at the international market" he said.

Mr Joseph Adediran, a veteran marketer and chairman of the occasion, said that Nigeria was a hard brand for the ministry to sell.

According to him, the ministry should go back to the basis of how Nigeria was in the 50s and identified where we missed it.

The ministry should do something about the product first, repackage it, if not forget it.

Nigeria will be worse for it if the problem of credibility gap is created in the re_branding.

"If what the ministry plans to sell as a product is not authentic and credible then our acceptability by other comity of nations will be difficult," he said

He pointed out that corruption by Nigeria 's past and present leaders were a great challenge in the selling of Nigeria as a brand.
