Nigeria: Rebranding - Ploy to Loot Public Funds - UNPP

Mustapha Suleiman

29 March 2009

The Deputy National Chairman of United Nigeria Peoples Party (UNPP) North, Chief Winston Odumu -Ojobi has described the recent launch of rebranding Nigeria project as a conduit pipe to drain public funds.

Odumu-Ojobi who chided President Yar'adua for lending his support to the project, said that, "It is unfortunate that the President is lending his support to a project that has no direct bearing on the lives of Nigerians and millions of public funds will yet again, be sunk into a meaningless project that is not necessary at this point in time, " he maintained.

He referred to similar projects of such nature that have failed in the past, alleging that Dora Akinyuli came up with the project to have her own access to the national cake.

" It is an avenue Akunyili initiated to have access to public funds, Nigerians are suffering and you say you want to rebrand them. I expect EFCC to investigate where such fund is coming from and whether it is budgeted for. Did you ever hear that they rebranded Britain or American or even Singapore which was one of the worst countries in the world? It was the radical positioning of their leadership and not rebranding that made them excel" He noted.

Speaking on development by the present leadership, Chief Ojobi said that the PDP led administration has not done enough to solve the avalanche socio -economic problems bedeviling the country, adding that the emergency declared by Yar'adua in the power sector is enough evidence that his administration is a failure.

" Power sector is worst now than it used to be during the military regime of late Sani Abacha. The seven point agenda is not realizable and then one wonders if the PDP led government is really focused in keeping to her electoral promises to the electorate," he said.

Commenting on the recent statement credited to FCT Minister Adamu Aleiro, about Yar'adua re-contesting in 2011, he said the FCT Minister is making such statement to curry favours from the president and be in his good book.
