Zimbabwe: I Had Cholera - Chipanga

28 March 2009

Harare — SUNGURA musician Hosiah Chipanga has disclosed that he went down with cholera last week after consuming unsafe water and food during his tours of Murehwa, Mutoko and Nyamapanda two weeks ago.

This week city.com paid him a visit at his Unit G Extension home where he is recovering.

"I contracted cholera after drinking some water, which I didn't know was unsafe during our shows in Murehwa, Mutoko and Nyamapanda.

"I was then taken to Unit L Clinic which is specifically set aside for cholera cases and they offered me their salt-based water treatment and also gave me some tablets that I am currently taking as well as those they use for purifying water.

"I was also treated at 24 Hour Services Clinic as well as at one surgery in the city run by one Dr Mutoko who was given my home address by someone from your workplace (Herald)," he said.

Chipanga suspects some of the food he ate during the tour might have also contributed to his illness.

"Pakudya pane zvandisina kuwirirana nazvo (I think some of the food I ate was not safe)," explained the musician, who was forced to cancel his shows as a result of the sickness.

He however, promised fans that he had recovered and would be holding shows this weekend.

"It wasn't anything serious. It happens in life, and I am not surprised.

"I assure fans that all is now well and they should look forward to new songs during our shows this week," he said.

Tomorrow, the musician will be playing at Odyssey in Kadoma.
