Mozambique: Constitutional Council Validates Nacala Election

Maputo — Mozambique's Constitutional Council on Tuesday validated the result of the second round of the mayoral election in the northern port of Nacala, won by the candidate of the ruling Frelimo Party - but also called for those responsible for fraud in several polling stations to be prosecuted.

A second round was thus required and took place on 11 February. Two minor party candidates were eliminated, and the contest was thus between the incumbent mayor, Manuel dos Santos, of the main opposition party, the former rebel movement Renamo, and his Frelimo challenger, Chale Ossufo.
