Nigeria: Senate Blames Food Insecurity on Neglect

Senate Ad-hoc Committee on food security and Agriculture has attributed Nigeria's food insecurity and poor agricultural production to continuing neglect of the sector by stakeholders.

Chairman of the Committee Senator Idris Umar, who led members of his committee to Sir Kashim Ibrahim House on a courtesy call to Governor Mohammed Namadi Sambo of Kaduna State weekend stressed that there were lots of neglect in the Agricultural sector and calling for urgent measures to reverse the trend.

According to him, the committee was mandated to inspect all Agricultural potentials and facilities across the country.

He expressed dismay by the leakages and waste discovered by the committee during the inspection.

He said: "The Senate Ad-hoc Committee was constituted last year by the Senate to investigate and proffer solutions to the food crisis in the country in spite of the huge investments in the agricultural sector. To give an appropriate report, we needed to go round the federation, after receiving several Memoranda from stakeholders from across the country".

He added: "The oil boom is eroding away, so we must come back to Agriculture, which is the back bone of our economy .Time has come for us to rededicate ourselves and bring back the sector to its former glory".

Umar said it was in line with the effort that the National Assembly appropriated N3.3 billion for completion of Galma Dam in Kaduna to increase irrigation activities in the area.

Responding, Governor Sambo said Kaduna was concerned with the food crisis in the country and had drew a roadmap through the suggestion of a think tank committee it set up last year.
