Uganda: Cheeye Jailed, Karimojong Protest

Kampala — IT is the grandfather of ironies that a man who made a name crusading against corruption should himself be convicted so harshly for high-handed corruption. Teddy Seezi Cheeye was the nightmare of the corrupt as owner of the defunct Uganda Confidential newsletter.

The former Director for Economic Affairs in External Security Organisation and presidential adviser was this week sent to Luzira prison for 10 years for embezzling sh110m meant for Malaria, HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis. The money was given to Uganda under the Global Fund, but a good portion of it went to sham organisations which failed to account for the funds received. Cheeye was also accused of forging receipts to show he had used the money to monitor Global Fund activities.
