Uganda: Pastor Ssematimba Kneels Down for Votes

Kampala — Pastor Peter Ssematimba, the NRM candidate in the Rubaga Division chairperson byelections, amazed spectators when he went down on his knees to beg for votes.

Dressed in a tight T-shirt, a black pair of jean-trousers and an NRM cap, Ssematimba pleaded: "I am begging for your votes. My strategies will bring the best results. This is not about parties. It is about access to funds to develop the division."

This was Ssematimba's first campaign tour to Kasubi Market where hundreds turned up to listen to him. He said it was difficult for parties that were not in power to access funds to implement the division's plans.

"The only people who have the money are in NRM. That is why I have decided to move with those in power, because they own everything," Ssematimba explained. "What we want are better services. Programmes cannot be implemented without money."

He promised to protect all the markets in the division from 'grabbers' and rehabilitate them to better standards.

He promised to create employment by embarking on neglected women and youth programmes.

James Eric Makumbi, the Democratic Party flag-bearer, however, vowed not to allow NRM take over Rubaga.

Other candidates aspiring for the post include Joyce Ssebugwawo of the Forum for Democratic Change, Henry Lubowa (Social Democratic Party), Justine Ssendikadiwa, the former LC3 chairperson and Abdu Karim, an independent candidate.
