Awka — THE Onitsha branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) threatened yesterday to drag the Anambra State government to court for demolishing a High Court building in the town (Onitsha), to give way for the construction of a new business park.
Government bulldozers yesterday reduced the former Court 6 to rubble, though it had earlier said that a new court complex would be constructed to house the demolished court.
Chairman of the association, Mr. Pascal Onuorah said after conducting newsmen round the demolished court, that the legal action might begin after due consultations with the members, adding that the demolition amounted to the triumph of injustice.
According to him, court records, including murder cases, have been destroyed and nobody could obtain certified true copy for any of the destroyed documents for anything in future, adding that the demolition came as a surprise to the members of the NBA, and staff of the Onitsha judiciary.
He described the demolition as uncivilized, arguing that it negated the principles of rule of law more so to a government that owned its existence to the judiciary.
He lamented that the demolition took place when the trial judge, Justice Anunude, was still sitting, adding that the judge had to be evacuated, while the bulldozers moved in to bring down the building housing two courts and judiciary office, without them removing court documents, including case files, record of proceedings, official gazettes among others.
