South Africa: ANC Election Bus 'Unlicensed'

An election bus ferrying ANC supporters around the city is unlicensed, traffic authorities confirmed.

At the time of going to press, officers were still trying to track down the vehicle.

The bus, which left the Townhouse hotel in the CBD this morning, was carrying a handful of supporters and was expected to visit several areas in the peninsula as part of the party's electioneering campaign.

Metro traffic spokeswoman Merle Lourens said eNATis records showed the licence for a yellow double-decker, emblazoned with ANC president Jacob Zuma's face, expired in 2004.

Traffic authorities were on their way to Mitchells Plain at noon to arrest the driver for driving an unlicensed vehicle. But Lourens said officers were having difficulty tracking the bus.

ANC Western Cape spokesman , Garth Strachan said the party's Chris Nissen, who was on the bus, had documents to show the bus was licensed.

Lourens said the driver could be fined R1 500.
