Uganda: Use 1955 Agreement to Share Oil Money, Bunyoro Says

Kampala — THE Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom wants the government of Uganda to operationalise the 1955 agreement on oil to solve the problems of proceeds from oil exploration.

Presenting a paper during the pre-press freedom day dialogue at Hoima Kolping Hotel recently, the Principal Private Secretary to the Omukama of Bunyoro, Yolamu Nsamba, said the 1955 agreement that was signed between the protectorate government and the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom still stands.

He said: "There is no law that has repealed this agreement. We have to stick to it as a kingdom and we want the Government to use this very agreement instead of going back to discuss how the proceeds from oil exploration shall be shared."

He said unless the Government releases the details of a revenue-sharing agreement at oil exploration sites in Bunyoro, they will demand for the enforcement of the pre-independence agreement to claim its dues.

Nsamba said the Central Government has remained silent on the details of its deal with the international companies prospecting for oil in mid-western Uganda.
