The project to modernise and expand Maputo airport is on track and will be ready by June 2010 - in time for the soccer World Cup in South Africa.
The airport management company Aeroportos de Moçambique last week signed the formal agreement with Chinese Company Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Corporation (AFECC) which won the US$75 million contract.
The project includes construction of a new international passenger terminal and apron, expansion of the existing terminal and its refurbishment to deal with domestic travellers, and creation of a duty free area, as well as building a VIP presidential area and respective access roads and car park.
The work also includes construction of a new control tower and its access roads and car park.
Maputo airport was opened in the 1960s and designed to deal with 60,000 passengers per year, but now deals with over 600,000 travellers.
AFEC is also involved in work to expand and modernise Vilanculos airport, a project located in southern Mozambique and estimated to cost US$15 million.
