Nigeria: Delta Pulls Down Illegal Structures in Asaba

Asaba — DELTA State capital, Asaba, is currently wearing a new look, as illegal structures on the major streets, especially the junks at the former toll gate by the Niger Bridge head and other parts of the highway, have been pulled down.

State Commissioner for Environment, Chief Lawrence Osiegbu, personally led a team on the demolition exercise.

As a result, the vicinity of the former toll gate which was dotted with all sorts of structures right down to Okwe junction, Asaba is now wearing a new look.

Commissioner Osiegbu, while addressing reporters shortly after the exercise, warned against any re-erecting of the demolished structures.

According to him, "I want to make it clear and sound this note of warning that the state government has approved the engagement of sanitation marshals who would be on patrol making sure that no illegal structures is re-erected.

"Anybody found re-erecting the removed structures which include caravans would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly".

He further said that "it is operation totality after we have given them enough time to evacuate. We went round on sensitization earlier telling the occupants to relocate, but they decided to pay deaf ears."

He said the demolition exercise would now shift to other towns like Warri.
