Harare — THE Zimbabwe Prison Service has deployed three officers to Khartoum, Sudan, on a peacekeeping mission.
The three are Chief Superintendent Taurai Rugara, a doctor, Superintendent Granisia Musango and Superintendent Ruzvidzo Muchongwe, who is an engineer.
The officers will be responsible for providing advice and support to the country's prison service personnel, developing local training capacity and providing training to personnel at senior management and institutional levels.
Two ZPS senior officers are already providing services in Sudan, namely Deputy Commissioner Fadzai Mupure and Assistant Commissioner Phineus Chitekuteku.
Two other officers -- Senior Assistant Commissioner Rhodes Moyo and Assistant Commissioner Didymus Chimvura -- have already been deployed to Liberia.
Senior Asst Comm Moyo's stint in Liberia had already been extended by six months "owing to his exceptional performance after being deployed on February 18, 2008".
The inclusion of two women, Dep Comm Mupure and Supt Musango, is in line with Zimbabwean and United Nations efforts to improve the gender balance in international peacekeeping operations.
To qualify for deployment, nominated officers with relevant qualifications and experience required for a specific job description would go through a selection process that includes interviews by the UN.
Several other officers are in line for deployment to various peacekeeping missions.
