Over 400 motorcycles have been impounded by the Imo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in the last three weeks, for violating the law on the use of safety helmets in Owerri metropolis.
Disclosing this in a telephone interview with Vanguard, Imo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Angus Obum Ibezim, promised that his Command would not relent in its crusade to enforce the road safety laws.
"The command had impounded over 400 motorcycles in the last three weeks, from those who were hell bent on violating the law on the use of safety helmets, in Owerri municipality alone. The crusade must continue until every user of motorbike buys into the safety guidelines", Ibezim said.
Meanwhile, the Sector Commander appealed to other paramilitary agencies operating in the state to assist in the enforcement and compliance of the use of safety helmets by motorcyclists in the state.
Ibezim, made the appeal during the inaugural meeting of members of the Task Force on the enforcement of use of safety helmets, at the Command Headquarters, Egbu.
He emphasised the need for the synergy among officers and men of law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of Nigerians on every road, especially within the Sector Command.
He was his opinion that safety ought to be a fundamental concern to all and sundry, adding that all hands must be on deck to ensure its full realization.
"Road traffic accidents have claimed a lot of precious lives in Nigeria. FRSC strongly believes that road safety ought to be a fundamental concern of everybody. We urge all security and paramilitary agencies operating in the state to assist FRSC in ensuring full realization of safety on our roads", Ibezim pleaded.
