Uganda: Kony Will Never Sign Peace Deal - Kankiriho

Kampala — Rebel leader Joseph Kony will never sign a peace agreement with the Government, the UPDF Third Division commander, Brig. Patrick Kankiriho, has said.

"Forget, Kony cannot sign peace with government," he said. Kankiriho said the army found the draft peace agreements with pictures of trees, boys and girls drawn on the papers, indicating that Kony did not take them seriously.

"We gave Kony time to talk peace but he decided to attack and kill innocent people in the region," he said. "Regional leaders then decided to fight a regional enemy with a joint force that I commanded from mid-December last year."

Kankiriho was speaking as a chief guest during a farewell party for Robert Okello who was transferred from Moroto to Kaabong as district internal security officer.

He said many rebels were killed and the army destroyed over 15 square miles of food thus making Kony incapacitated.

"We found mostly old guns and bullets, an indication that he had taken long without receiving supplies," Kankiriho said. He also said the army recovered new saucepans and cups that had been supplied by NGOs.

"I am not accusing NGOs since they are mandated to help whoever is in need," Kankiriho said. He advised civil servants to always leave good records as they moved to other offices.

He asked the Karimojong to embrace the prevailing peace to develop through agriculture.
