Nigeria: New Plans to Transform Abuja Airport Into 'Africa's Aviation Hub'

Nigeria's Federal Government is planning to construct a new international terminal for Abuja's Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Babatunde Omotoba, minister of aviation, made this announcement last week during a meeting with officials from Lufthansa German Airlines/Technik. The government is currently in talks with Lufthansa about the building of a second runway at the airport.

According to Omotoba, the new terminal will replace the existing one, which will be converted into a domestic terminal.

He added that it is President Umaru Yar'Adua's desire to transform the Abuja airport into Africa's aviation hub.

Earlier this year TradeInvestNigeria reported that Lufthansa Technik is going to establish an aircraft maintenance facility in Abuja.

President Yaradua a visionary leader? Is my mouth running too fast? lets give this guy the benefit of the doubt. Yes if this project will be executed to the letter, it's worthwhile if it will not be politicised as eventually Nigeria will need this project later on in the future. You see this country has produced enough great men, now we need a great projects like this, infrastructure needs can not be reduced to bread and tea, as failing to do this project will not automatically guaranty that money meant for this will be transfered to the poor's pocket. While I agree that Nigeria needs to care for its people as that is what I define as development, infrastructural development can not be relegated to the background, we are suffering today due to the neglect of that sector. Addis Ababa airport is alreay one like this, If Lufthansa Technik of germany will partner to build a workshop, what alone will save money for aircraft maintenance, job creations and skill transfer besides, lets think on how this great country can really be great and occupy its true position on this globe. Corruption in govt has forcefully reduced Nigeria to poverty today, mother nature did not conceive Nigeria to be that at all. Only Social security laws and bills like it is done in advanced countries to save their people from capitalists' ever thirsty for profits will save the common man in Nigeria from the greed of our leaders, Nigeria should begin to pay unemployment benefits to youths to reduce crime and kidnapping and other social vises as common among youths today

At this time of economic meltdown,Nigeria can not afford a project of the said magnitude. People can not have 3 meals a day not to talk of adequate power supply which in itself a luxury. Please instead of spending this money on this frivilous programme, should pay more attention to projects that will help the people of Nigeria. Proposing this project alone, tells how unrealistic this administration has been all-along if not unlettered.Don't try to tell people that the project can provide jobs to thousands ofgraduates in Nigeria without jobs. You got to kidding me. The job creation will only be for politicians and their cronnies who can not even be able to write their names on a paper. Thanks . Protocol84
