Eritrea: President Isaias Makes Inspection Tour of Development And Construction Projects in Gash-Barka Region

Barentu — President Isaias Afwerki made an inspection tour of progress of development and construction programs in Gash-Barka region from April 28 to 30.

The President inspected the vigorous and coordinated endeavors being made on the part of national construction companies and government garage to renovate the Aligidir Water Diversion Scheme, during which he conducted discussion with heads and experts on the tasks so far accomplished and future work programs. Exchanging views with experts on the tasks that need to be undertaken so as to prevent damage by Gash River on agricultural sites in the forthcoming rainy season, he called on them to set up the endeavors.

Also in the course of a visit to observe the activities being carried out to repair the damage sustained by heavy rains in the area between the Aligidir Water Diversion Scheme and the Tessenei Bridge, and thereby guarantee its resistance to future natural onslaught, President Isaias inspected the tasks being undertaken and held discussion with project coordinators on future work programs in general and contingency plans in particular.

Moreover, the President visited river water distribution scheme around Aligidir and the activities underway to renovate it and thereby make the land plots ready for cultivation. He also conducted in-depth discussion with experts and project coordinators on detailed programs that need to be implemented so as to introduce drip irrigation technology.

In the course of an inspection tour to the strategic Gerset Dam, President Isaias observed the preparations being made to construct a water tanker at a higher site so as to put extensive farmland under cultivation, and reached understanding with heads of the project on the need to undertake land leveling below the dam.

Furthermore, he inspected the construction of 500 sponge housing complexes around in Gerse through Homib Construction Company at minimum expenditure that would be distributed to the people at fair price, during which he was given briefings on the project.

Also visiting the experimental maize plantation below Fanko Dam which is bearing encouraging outcome, the President exchanged views on the need to introduce select seeds that yield more and better output.

President Isaias also visited the new 5 km-long asphalted road that links the main Haikota-Tessenei route with Gash Bridge and would bisect Fanko and Gerset to ultimately reach Golij, which would in turn facilitate the implementation of development and construction programs. He further inspected the 22-meter high and 115-meters long new bridge under construction on Gash River around the Tokombia semi-urban center through Gedem Construction Company, in addition to the construction of 20 meter-long bridge on Walwalai River around Shemshemia that used to cause transport problem to people and vehicles during the rainy season. He also exchanged views with experts and members of the Warsay-Yikaalo Development Campaign engaged in the task.

Besides, the President visited the bricks factory in Primakantri around Barentu town and conducted discussion with managers as regards the steps that need to be taken in order to ensure its effectiveness. He also put forth opinions highlighting the significance of operating the machine installed for facilitating the factory's activities and that the production and effectiveness of the limestone factory under construction should be properly assessed.
