A vaccine to prevent infection and spread of tuberculosis will soon undergo clinical trial in Canada.
The vaccine was developed, manufactured and tested by McMaster University in Ontario
Currently called the AdAg85A vaccine, the TB vaccine is expected to provide hope for the many persons at risk of contacting the TB virus especially in Africa where the virus is the greatest killer of HIV/AIDS patients.
"The exciting thing is that this is a transnational research that has gone from the basic science where the vector has been designed here at McMaster, then manufactured here, with all the pre-clinical studies done at McMaster," Dr. Fiona Smaill, Chairwoman of McMaster's Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, said in a statement.
The phase one clinical trial, conducted by a team of infectious disease physicians, vaccine manufacturing specialists and immunologists at McMaster, is expected to last 12-18 months. Recruitment of 48 healthy volunteers ages 18 to 55 is billed to begin soon.
Further details include that McMaster researchers, led by Zhou Zing, developed the TB vaccine using a genetically modified adenovirus, a virus responsible for the common cold. After removing a small portion of the gene, the researchers inserted part of the TB gene responsible for immunity.
