Uganda: Egyptian President to Open Gaba Landing Site

Kampala — PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni and the Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, are expected to open Gaba Landing Site in June, an official of the Gaba Beach Management Unit has said.

"The Egyptian minister of water resources and irrigation, Dr. Mahmoud Abu-Zeid, was here to assess development of the site and promised us that Hosni Mubarak would preside over the opening of the landing site," the unit's chairman, Idris Walusimbi, said.

"Uganda's fisheries minister Fred Mukisa and the acting commissioner for fisheries also promised us that they are coordinating the attendance of President Museveni," he said in an interview at Gaba.

Gaba Landing Site is among the several projects being funded by the Egyptian government. Others include the renovation of Portbell in Luzira and Masese Landing Site in Jinja as well as landing sites on the shores of lakes Kyoga and Albert.

Walusimbi said in 1999, Egypt gave Uganda a grant of $13.9m.
