The women at the Bakau Horticultural Garden, opposite Radio Gambia, have on the 26 April, 2009 informed this reporter that they would be in a position to contribute in providing enough food for the country if they are capacitated with more wells and pumping machines at their garden.
Speaking to this reporter in an interview conducted at the Bakau Women Horticultural Garden, Jainaba Drammeh, a native of Bakau New Town told this reporter that she has been working as a gardener in the aforesaid garden for the past 20 years. She further said that the most common vegetables they grow are garden egg, onion, cabbage, pepper and okra.
Maimuna Jatta, another gardener, said they usually sell their produce at the Bakau Women Horticultural garden, but when the demand is low, they transport it to the Serrekunda market for sale. The lack of a fixed market price for their vegetables is affecting their business, she said. She added that a full bag of cabbage cost between D150 to D200, and garden egg D200. Isatou Camara, of Old Jewshwang, Aja Kantending of Bakau Kachically, Aja Buya Jaiteh of Bakau New Town ,all called on the NGO's and the donor agencies to assist them by providing them with more wells and pumping machines, and insecticides.
