Cameroon: Worth West - PIAASI Trains Future Beneficiaries

Bamenda I( Mezam): The government of Cameroon has as one of its major objectives to alleviate poverty and to improve the livelihood of its citizens. Owing to the fact that the informal sector occupies about 80% of the Country's economy but contributes less than 10% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The government put in place some structures to help improve efficiency of actors in this sector. Consequently, the Integrated Support Project for Informal Sector,( PIAASI) was set up in 2002.It has as main objectives; to identify and organize the informal sector actors into groups by sector, provide financial support to struggling project promoters, do follow- up and recover credits, and to train " "Artisan Masters" in the informal sector.

Against this back drop, PIAASI North West organized a one day seminar to train trainers to assist young future beneficiaries of PIAASI Credits. The seminar was a rare moment for those who have benefited and future beneficiaries of the project to express their worries and learn more on how to manage their credits and businesses.

Opening the seminar, the Regional Delegate of Employment and vocational Training and Supervisor of PIAASI for the North West Oben Etah Daniel disclosed that PIAASI has so far created jobs for 1500 people in the North West Region. He said, the project have been successful in the region as most of the beneficiaries are refunding as stipulated. He advised future beneficiaries to make good use of the money and urged participants to practice what they learnt in the seminar.

On his part, the Regional Technical Secretary of PIAASI for the North West Tataghemg Ibrahim said the seminar train trainers who will in turn educate future beneficiaries on PIAASI activities and how to manage their business. Tataghemg Ibrahim disclosed that after giving out the credit, the beneficiary has six months guarantee and 12 months to refund the money without interest.

One of the beneficiary Nkeng Pius testify that the PIAASI credits enabled him to extend his plantain plantation and employed four youths. During the seminar participants were drilled on " Qualities of a Good Business Lreader in the context of PIAASI", "Knowing your Business Environment", " Managing your Business", and Conception and Managing a Project.
