Nigeria: The North and the Power Projects

opinion

The lamentations by the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) over the persistent power outage in Nigeria especially in the North as a matter "of deep concern because the current power supply network leaves the Northern states vulnerable to loss of power even in the best of times."

This critical observation was contained in the communiqué after the meeting of its Board of Trustee (BOT) under the chairmanship of Lt. General Jeremiah Useni, recently. According to the communiqué signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Anthony Sani, the ACF is worried that "part of the reasons the entire country is suffering an aggravated effect of the power outage is because almost all the power plants were built in one part of the country to the neglect of the North". Furthermore, the Communiqué ended on this issue by calling on the government to ensure that subsequent planning, and construction of power plants, particularly those to be built with the $5.3 billion contributed by all the three tiers of government do not escalate the disadvantages already being suffered by the Northern states.
