In China and India, bicycles compete for space on the roads with cars. Bicycles owned and used in China are believed to be close to 400 million. For a total human population slightly higher than one billion, that means one bicycle for every three persons.
The reality contrasts with Nigeria where bicycle commuting is considered a poor man's alternative relative to other types of vehicles. In Kaduna, a largely elitist city with an upper crust cruising around in some of the most exotic cars and jeeps known to modernity, buses and motorcycles are the lowest forms of vehicle considered fitting for even the masses. Bicycles have long become a rare sight.
