Monrovia — The European Commission has warned that Liberia could easily slip back into conflict if the harmful past habits that were the cause of the civil conflicts are not overcome.
"...It is necessary to break away from harmful past habits if the country is to overcome the root of its conflicts," the EC Charge' d'Affaire M. Bernard Piette said recently during a program marking the celebration of Europe Day here.
Mr. Piete further added his voice to the ongoing delay in the passing of the threshold bill, saying "today the preparation of the next general elections should not be delay.
He suggested that in the next few years emphasis should be placed on Security Sector and Judicial reforms here, while adding that the country further pursue regional integration within ECOWAS and the Mano River Union as it will benefit stability and prosperity within the country and the entire region.
The EC Charge' d'Affaire also questioned the legitimacy and the deterrent effect of the death penalty, saying "we believe that the dignity of man is inviolable and feel that the cycle of violence must be interrupted."
Liberia passed a death penalty bill last year as a way of deterring arm robbers who rape and committed murder during the crime. The country was highly criticised for the passage of that bill.
Meanwhile, the EC said it is fully committed to support LIberia in helping it overcome the roots of the conflicts, but cautioned that change will not come quickly.
"Let us be realistic," he said. "The reinvention of the Liberian state and the building of a new Nation is a long term process." He said Liberia began its transition to full democracy during the 2005 elections, adding that "to reach this step and give Liberians hope, the country needs stability and a strong determined government."
The EC diplomat, however, urged the country to count on the EU, saying that the EC will remain a committed partner in ensuring stability and democracy here.
"In order to help fulfilling the hope of the Liberian people for peace and prosperity and to assist the government to address all these daunting challenges, the European Commission, together with the EU Member States, is ready to further strengthen our partnership with Liberia in the next few years," he said.

How to leave the ugly past when the Constitution allows citizenship (and full rights to own business, property , enroll in Law School, etc) only to Black people? I am not sure if there is any danger to black people today for the ugly past to hang like a shadow on the beautifull country...The regime likes white people`s money (aids of all types) but do not want to give anything in return...If the Europeans , Asians and USA allows that...It appears that the politicians from these countries do not care or are fully ignorant about what is going in Liberia today...Look at what praises madam Clinton gave Liberian`s Boss few days ago..But if Madam Clinton should apply for citizenship and equal rights in Liberia: Iwould like to hear about what she has to say.Or about this:Is Jesus or Prophet Mohamed a Liberian Citizen? Or could THEY be?if I may ask...So long the segregation takes place it will never be any harmony in the country...It is damadged the Fundamental Law of Nature,: THE LAW OF UNITY IN DIVERSITY...So long the Diversity is endangered(by standard black citizens only present in the country-that is a sort of uniformity) the ivolence will erupt and destroy evrything , trying to establish the natural order of DIversity in UNITY...Simple as that!
