Kampala — WOMEN MPs and members of civil society organisations have resolved to meet the President over a number of issues, including increasing the appointment of women to public offices.
The decision was reached during a meeting between the MPs and the representatives of civil society organisations involved in women issues at Parliament yesterday.
The MPs, under the Uganda Women Parliamentary Association, and the civil society commended the President for supporting women.
They, however, said many issues affecting them still needed to be addressed.
Civil society organisations represented included the Uganda Association of Women Lawyers, Forum for African Women Educationalists, Women and Gender Studies Makerere University, OXFAM and Kamwokya Christian Caring Community.
"We want more women in Parliament, the Cabinet and other decision making positions," said MPs chairperson, Jane Alisemera.
The women demanded to know when the Equal Opportunities Commission would be established as required by the Constitution.
They were concern that legislation affecting women had not been brought to Parliament. They cited the family laws and the Bill on domestic violence.
The women also expressed concern over the high maternal mortality, malaria and female genital mutilation.
Alisemera said the MPs invited civil society organisations to harmonise their positions on issues affecting women.
