Margareta Widerholm, a Swedish lady currently residing in Kartong, recently sponsored the construction of a community library named 'Margareta's Library' for the community of Kartong.

The library is located in the premises of St Martin's Basic Cycle School. In an interview with the Daily Observer at the library, she said the new library is a reading place for both students and villagers with no fee like some other places in the urban area. As a new library, according to her, it is open for everyone to do his or her reading at his or her leisure, and is open 3 times a week, weekends inclusive.

Margareta Widerholm further called for individual contributions towards the continued development of the library. She said since the library is open for people to use in the afternoon through evening, there is need for power supply either through solar power or a generator. According to Philip Jersey, the librarian of Margareta's Library, since the opening of the library, students and villagers have been visiting the centre adding that as time goes on, it will become more popular in the community.

Mary Hilda Mendy, a student of Saint Martin's and one of the library users, said "I like it. I am impressed with the library because we (the students) have the opportunity to concentrate on our studies and borrow some books." She appealed to Margareta's Library management to extend the days and time of using the library.

Ousman K Jammeh, chairman - School Management Committee (SMC), described the library as a good initiative. He commended Margareta Widerholm for her support towards the education and development of the community.
