Moses Matovu a.k.a Moyi, the Afrigo Band leader, can be kind, soft and then tough in the same breath. He is such a professional and you shudder to think how strict he will be on May 16 at Afrigo Band's new home-coming. Little Flowers, now New Obbligato, will officially be opened and a new chapter of their history will be unveiled.
Afrigo Band used to charge Shs 7,000 in 2005 and 2006 for an entry ticket. They were compelled to start charging Shs 10,000 because the number of revellers was bulging and yet Club Obbligato was not expanding. But even the Shs 10,000 has proved ineffective in containing the massive crowds that flock Afrigo Band shows every weekend.
This made bigger space an imperative. And not only that, Matovu adds, "the new home has an executive wing where people who would like to sit in private without being squeezed can go."
Matovu says that many times the sitting arrangement at Plot 18 Old Port Bell Road has meant that when people start dancing, those seated are not able to view the action on stage because they are blocked.
"But here at Little Flowers, our fans seated or dancing, will be able to view their entertainers from all angles without any blockade," he explains.
Besides, the Afrigo home at Old Port Bell Road did not have sufficient shelter from rain. It was not uncommon to see some of their avid fans such as Nyombi Thembo (Minister in-charge of Luwero Triangle) and Brigadier Kasirye Ggwanga fleeing the club because of rain.
"Rain has been a problem but at Little Flowers there is a shade to allow our fans dance without any rain interruptions," says Matovu.
With Afrigo settling at New Obbligato, competition is expected for popular pub Red Night in the neighbourhood. However, this feared competition will not affect Katch Me Pub because it attracts a different crop of revellers altogether. Katch Me has a generally youthful following, while Afrigo appeals more to older fans.
