Liberia: Deputy Speaker Takes Brother to Court for Possessing Narcotic Drugs

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives at the 52nd National Legislature, Tokpah J. Mulbah on Monday, May 11, 2009, forwarded his brother, Arthur Mulbah and his alleged accomplice, Thompson Karblee to court for prosecution after being charged by police with illegal possession of narcotic drugs.

The two suspects were formally charged after being arraigned before the Monrovia City Court and remanded in prison.

According a police charge sheet, a copy of which is in possession of FrontPageAfrica, suspects Karblee and Mulbah were arrested on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at Pipeline Road in Paynesville, outside Monrovia, with huge consignment of marijuana.

The police confirmed that the arrest of the Deputy Speaker, Mulbah's brother Arthur and Thompson were carried out after Speaker Mulbah had received a tip -off that his ( Tokpah's) GOL white Toyota pick-up marked RL- 1082 had been used to transport the marijuana to Monrovia.

The narcotic drugs which weighed about 23.5 kilograms and valued at L$ 126,900, according to the police was grown in Palala, Bong County.

Palala in Bong County and Nimba County are two places notoriously known for growing marijuana in Liberia.

Police further noted in their charge sheet that during their preliminary investigation held with the two defendants, it was established that Karlee, who is the driver for the Deputy Speaker, and Arthur Mulbah admitted to the commission of the crime.

Suspect Mulbah, who police said, he and three others escaped arrest and was rearrested from his Congo Town residence, located behind the Comium Cell Phone Company.

The defendants have been detained at Monrovia Central Prison Compound, pending court trial.

Police further maintained that the alleged acts of the defendants are in violation of section 14.23 of the public Health Law of Liberia.
