Addis Ababa — The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) will start distribution of relief food worth USD 50 million to hunger-stricken Ethiopians.
The organisation will feed more than a million Ethiopians affected by the on-going drought through a four-month emergency food assistance plan, supported by the United States Agency for International Development.
"Once again, scores of Ethiopian farmers are expected to harvest little or nothing from their fields due to drought, CRS country representative in Ethiopia, Lane Bankers said. "The emergency food being shipped from the United States will help the most-affected people to survive during these difficult times and reduce the need for families to sell important possessions such as livestock and farming tools to purchase food."
The organisation is planning to distribute over 87,000 tonnes of relief food to 1,186, 359 Ethiopians who have been identified by the government as the worst hit by drought.
The CRS is also supporting long term agricultural and irrigation projects to assist Ethiopian farmers withstand drought situations.
