Angola: Business Opportunities Debated in U.S.

Luanda — Business opportunities in Angola have been debated in Washington, US, on Wednesday during a round table organised by the Angola mission there, the Chamber of commerce of the two states and the US oil company Chevron, Angop has learnt.

Main lecturer was the co-ordinator of the re-structuring commission of the National Agency of Private Investments (ANIP), Aguinaldo Jaime, and was part of the visit the Foreign Affairs Minister, Assunção dos Anjos, is paying to that country.

According to a press communiqué, Aguinaldo Jaime spoke on the current moment of the Angolan economy, the results achieved in macroeconomic domain, the effects of the world economic crisis and pointed out the measures that have been taken to tackle the same effects.

On the effects of the world crisis, that official said that state general budget had been elaborated in basis of the oil price that was estimated at USD 55 per barrel.

He said that although Angola had been hit by the crisis, due to the reduction of oil and diamond prices, as well as reduction of the oil production, Angolan economy may record a great growth this year, despite some retraction.

Aguinaldo Jaime also said that despite this crisis, Angola will continue with its national reconstruction and rehabilitation of infra-structures such as bridges, roads, railways, ports and airports and social houses.

The note quoted Aguinaldo Jaime as saying that the non oil sector will continue to grow and according to indicators from 2007 and 2008 the investments are coming mainly from Asia, Europe, Africa, Central and South America.

He regretted the fact that ANIP receives few investments from America and encouraged local businessmen to invest in the African country Participants spoke on businesses climate and mainly on the difficulties in creating a business or company in Angola, visa granting to enter in the African country, as well as the ban on the Angolan Airlines Company (Taag) of flying over the European Union space.

Moderated by the manager of international affairs with Chevron, Sola Omole the meeting had the participation of businessmen and representatives of the firms such as Boeing, General Motors, General Electric, BP, Good Works International, Cohen Group, Comcast and Delta Airlines.

Under the bilateral co-operation, Delta Airlines will inaugurate this year a flight linking Washington, the USA capital city, to Luanda.

On Thursday, a team of the International Financial Corporation, with the World Bank (WB) will meet with the Angolan delegation that will present the report named "Doing Business in Angola 2009".

Representing the Angolan side will be Aguinaldo Jaime, the deputy minister of commerce, Gomes Cardoso, and high ranking officials of the embassy to the United States of America.
