Zambia: EU Calls for State-Church Partnership for Development

The European Union has called on the government to work closely with the church in dissemination of information on sexual and reproductive health.

Visiting EU delegation leader, Susan Tomas, said the church had an important role to play in the dissemination of information on sexual and reproductive health. Ms Thomas said after a tour of reproductive health projects supported by the EU that there was need for the church to come in and help in teaching the public on sexual reproductive health.

At the same function, Irish parliamentarian Fiona O'Malley said there was need for the government to come up with a policy on sexual and reproductive health. The delegation also said the government should continue to support the youth so that they could know about sexual health.

The calls come at a time when the church in Africa is responsible for providing most of the medical and HIV/Aids care. In some countries it provides up to 50 percent of all HIV/Aids services.

The EU parliamentarians are in the country to check on some of the donor-funded projects on reproductive health in Zambia with particular focus on Southern Province.
