Kampala — A MAKERERE University student has been sentenced to seven years in prison for pouring acid on his ex-lover's face.

Simon Lukato, 25, met Shanita Nabuuma on April 15 last year as she was leaving home for work at Tuwereza Bakery in Masaka town and demanded an explanation as to why she had ended their relationship. He then poured acid on her face and fled.

Nabuuma raised an alarm and her colleagues took her to hospital. Lukato, a third-year student of industrial relations, was arrested the following day.

Justice David Batema of the High Court sitting in Masaka said: "The accused is a violent sadist, an extremely dangerous intimate terrorist and one who should not be allowed to play with the emotions of our sisters. He is a beast of a man."

Nabuuma lost her left eye, breathes through a tube and has a disfigured face. She is also seven months pregnant with Lukato's child.

"The accused confessed to having poured the acid on his ex-lover with a motive to disfigure her so that she becomes too ugly to be loved by other men," Batema said.

"Attempted murder charges cannot stand when the accused had not malice aforethought to murder," Batema explained.

He added that the accused could only be convicted of minor offences related to the charges since he did not have mallice aforethought.
